An Open Letter to our Local Newspapers

A recent article in the Journal news asked for volunteers to sell daffodils for the American Cancer Society.  After my wife lost her valiant battle with pancreatic cancer several years ago, I became a "Cancer Activist" and began researching the various cancer charities, as well as conventional and alternative methods of treating this most deadly disease by the "Cancer Establishment" better known as the "Cancer Industry"

Now some facts about the largest private philanthropic institution in the country (besides being the worlds largest non-religious charity devoted exclusively to cancer) The American Cancer Society  (hereafter referred to as the ACS) was founded on May 22nd, 1913 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. at the Harvard Club in New York City.  It was an elite vehicle for charitable contributions of New York's wealthiest families.  For decades the ACS used fear of contracting and dying from cancer, "Mass-Cancerphobia" it's critics called it as a prime technique in their advertising and promotions.  The ACS described itself as a "temporary" organization that would cease to exist once cancer had been eradicated.  Now nearly a century later the society is the richest private medical-orientated charity in the world with no sign of going out of business.

Housed in a lavish office building in Atlanta Georgia consisting of 57 chartered divisions and 3500 community based groups.  The national headquarters survives by taking 40% of each divisions funds.  Although the ACS bills itself as primarily volunteer based, the single most important spending category at the state levels is for staff salaries ranging from 45 to 60% of the total budget.

Throughout the 1980's the ACS kept silent when the Reagan and Bush administrations rolled back regulations on industrial carcinogens and it failed to warn the public about avoiding exposure to environmental carcinogens.  The same is taking place today with easing restrictions on power plant emissions throughout the country responsible for many types of cancer including breast and lung.  The ACS refused to support the clean air act, clean water legislation and others too numerous to mention.   Needing cash to boost it's "cancer fighting programs" at a time when membership donations were stagnating, the ACS accepted four million dollars to exclusively endorse Florida Orange Juice and one million dollars from Glaxo-SmithKline to place their logo on Nic-O-Derm anti smoking patches.  This is the same Glaxo Company that is stopping shipments of all prescription drugs to Canada to prevent American Citizens from saving almost 50% on drug costs.  We believe the ACS in effect is a primary public relations arm for the mainstream cancer and pharmaceutical industries.

Finally, mammography and breast cancer.  The ACS has close connections to the mammography industry.  Five Radiologists have served as ACS Presidents and in its every move the ACS reflects the interests of the major manufacturers of mammogram machines and film including Siemens, Dupont, GE, Kodak and Piker.  In closing we would like to make the public aware of the heavily publicized "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month" campaign that further illustrates the institutionalized conflict of interest.  The flagship of this month long series of events is National Mammography Day.  Conspicuously absent from this public relations campaign is any information on environmental and other causes of breast cancer.  This is no accident.  Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, a spin off of Imperial Chemical Industries, one of the worlds largest manufacturers of chlorinated and other industrial chemicals, including those incriminated as causes of breast cancer has been the sole multi million dollar funder of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month since its inception in 1984.   Zeneca is also the sole manufacturer of Tamoxifen, the worlds top selling anti-cancer and breast cancer "prevention" drug with over four hundred million dollars in annual sales.  Studies show that women taking Tamoxifen after surviving breast cancer have a higher propensity to develop Endometrial Cancer.  Since Zeneca influences every leaflet, poster, publication and commercial produced by National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, its no wonder these publications make no mention of carcinogenic industrial chemicals and pollution and their relation to breast cancer.  Imperial, Zeneca's parent company profits by manufacturing breast cancer causing chemicals.   Zeneca profits from treatment of breast cancer.  What salesperson wouldn't want a an arrangement like that. Please remember the above when October 2003 comes around.  The American Cancer Society doesn't want you to know about the above, we can't blame them.  The verdict is in, the ACS bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.

As you sell your daffodils, mail out fund raising letters, take part in dog  walks,  relay races, donate your old cars, or bequeath part of your estate please take the time to think over where your money may be going.  For more information visit our website at www.themsmfoundation.org

Discover the origin and history of the American Cancer Society, its aims and goals, record of cancer prevention (or lack of) so called cancer research, links to the pharmaceutical industry (their contributions and grants to the ACS) links to big business, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and finally their infamous "Unproven Methods List" used successfully to prevent any treatment other than conventional, including alternative medical procedures that may have possibly cured some cancers.  But this would go against their own description of themselves as a temporary organization that would cease to exist once cancer had been eradicated.   They would have to give up hundreds of millions of dollars in interest bearing bank accounts, tens of millions of dollars in real estate holdings, fleets of cars, six figure salaries and other perks.   There are more people making money from cancer than dying from it.  We don't believe a cure for cancer is in their interest.

Remember, it's more profitable to treat cancer than to cure it.
